Writing Whenever or Wherever

Some writers have the luxury of a certain time and space in which to write, while the rest of us have to fit our writing in here and there. Each evening I look at the next day to see where I can fit in my writing time. Although I don’t have a full time job, I do have other responsibilities and activities. So the next day I try hard to fulfill my writing obligations. Unless something comes up…

I often think things out in my head while doing other things. For instance, I’m a jigsaw puzzle junkie. Puzzling keeps my forebrain busy while my hindbrain is working on my story plot. Also. there is a place in my backyard where I can sit, contemplate the lake and the trees, and write without distractions.

One thing about writing a draft in longhand, you don’t get distracted by all the other stuff on your computer. Sometimes I close everything except Word, so I won’t be tempted to check email or anything else. You never know when an idea or the answer to something you’ve been searching will pop into your head. I always keep a pad of paper and pen handy. If I don’t write it down right away, it disappears.
